College Hate Incidents
On college campuses, an increasing number of students are victims of hate incidents. These incidents affect students directly and indirectly. Indeed, the entire college community can feel the repercussions of a single act of intolerance. Pick ONE of the following real-life examples. Describe how you would respond effectively as a student. What would you do? Why? At whom would your response be directed? Why? In the entranceway to a dormitory, you discover a message written on the dry erase board that describes Blacks as welfare recipients and STD spreaders. A columnist for a student newspaper refers to Whites as “irredeemable racists” and calls for Blacks to execute Whites who pose a threat. A college fraternity holds a “Mexican Border Party.” To gain entrance, students have to crawl under a barbed-wire barrier. Leaflets depicting the Holocaust as a hoax are handed out in front of a building housing a Jewish student organization. A group of students takes it upon themselves to sell T-shirts with anti-homosexual slogans. One of the T-shirts advocates violence against gays and lesbians. Another has the words “Homophobic and Proud of It” printed on the front.
